In simple words
Who buys it, and where to start
Home decorators, interior designers, collectors of tribal textiles and Muslim families buying prayer rugs shop for Pakistani rugs online. They buy for the long hand-knotting tradition and the value of handmade pieces.
Good first products
- Mini rugs (2x3): Small hand-knotted rugs make affordable gifts and cost far less to ship than room-size rugs.
- Kilim cushion covers: They are a cheaper first product than full rugs and light to post.
- Kilim runners: Runners for halls and kitchens are a popular size and easier to ship than big carpets.
Be careful with
- Large room-size rugs are heavy and costly to ship and return, so start small.
- Do not call a modern Pakistani rug 'antique' or 'Persian'; say 'Persian-style' if that is the design.

How to start
First steps
- Ask a Lahore rug trader for three mini rugs and one runner, with the material and knot details for each.
- Measure and weigh each rug and get a real courier quote before you set prices.
- List the mini rugs first, with clear photos of the front, back and fringes.
Rules in plain words
What to check
Most rugs need no special licence, but label the material, such as wool or cotton, honestly. Kids' and nursery rugs fall under children's product rules, so testing may be needed, including for flammability, and non-slip backing is wise. Wool rugs sold in the US follow wool labelling rules.
- Children's products: they need safety tests for small parts, cords and chemicals before you sell them. (11 product types)

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Why sell mini rugs and runners instead of big carpets?
Small rugs cost less to make, ship and return. They let you learn what buyers want before you put money into large pieces.
How can I tell a hand-knotted rug from a machine-made one?
Turn the rug over. A hand-knotted rug shows the pattern on the back with small, slightly uneven knots, while a machine rug looks very regular. Show the back in your photos so buyers can see it too.
Can I take custom orders?
Yes, Lahore workshops make custom sizes and colours, and interior designers buy this way. Give a clear making time and get colour approval before weaving starts.
