Short answer: profit per order = price minus (product + packaging + shipping + duties + platform and payment fees + ads + returns allowance). Aim for 25 to 30% or more after all costs. As of November 2026, an Etsy sale from Pakistan pays about 13% of the price in Etsy fees plus $0.50 per order, and parcels to the US and EU no longer enter duty-free, so many single low-priced parcels lose money. Work the numbers before you buy stock.

The formula

Profit per order = Price - (product + packaging + shipping + duties + platform and payment fees + ads + returns allowance)

Margin = profit per order / price. Aim for 25 to 30% or more after all costs. A quick first filter from the guide: a selling price of about 3 times the product cost, then check the full formula.

  • Product: what you pay the maker, in dollars at today's rate (the examples use Rs 277 to $1, the October 2026 level).
  • Packaging: box, mailer, tissue, story card, moisture barrier for food or salt.
  • Shipping: the real courier quote for your packed weight, or volumetric weight for bulky items.
  • Duties and clearance: US parcels pay normal duty for the product's tariff code plus an extra 10% Section 301 duty on Pakistani goods (from 24 July 2026), with no duty-free small-parcel allowance; EU parcels up to EUR 150 pay EUR 3 per item category from 1 July 2026, plus VAT. Add courier clearance fees.
  • Platform and payment fees: marketplace commission, listing fees and payment processing.
  • Ads: your average ad spend per sale, including Etsy Offsite Ads when they apply.
  • Returns allowance: a percentage of the price set aside for refunds and replacements, because returning goods to Pakistan rarely makes sense.

Defaults are examples, not quotes. Etsy fees for a Pakistan bank account are 6.5% transaction plus 6.5% + $0.30 payment processing, plus $0.20 per listing (November 2026). Duty depends on the product’s HS code; check with your courier.

Etsy fees for a Pakistan-based shop

As of November 2026, a shop whose bank country is Pakistan pays a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total including shipping, and payment processing of 6.5% + $0.30 per order. That is 13% of the order plus $0.50. Offsite Ads, when a sale comes from one, add 15% (12% for shops above $10,000 a year), capped at $100 per order. Details in how to sell on Etsy from Pakistan.

Worked examples (illustrative)

All figures are illustrative assumptions (October 2026, Rs 277 to $1), from the guide's examples. Etsy lines are recalculated with the Pakistan processing rate of 6.5% + $0.30. Replace every line with your own quotes.

Peshawari chappal, Etsy, single parcel to the US

Duty and brokerage allowance (15% of price)13.35
Returns allowance (5%)4.45
Profit per order11.38 (13%)

Lesson: thin. Shipping and duty take about 40% of the price. The 15% duty allowance is an assumption: check the real US duty rate for your footwear tariff code plus the 10% Section 301 duty, and your courier's clearance fee.

Lesson: no shipping or duty, but the fixed $0.50 per order takes a big bite from a low price. You need volume: many designs and bundles.

Lesson: healthy, because one parcel carries the whole order and the business buyer pays import duty. Single retail patches on Etsy are much tighter.

Lesson: bulk shipping fixes the parcel problem, but a commodity product still leaves about $2. Recheck the duty allowance with the 10% Section 301 duty included. Better angles: a salt cooking-block kit at $39.99 or more, carved shapes, or B2B spa walls.

Lesson: best margin and no stock. The real cost is your time and building a portfolio.

Break-even and target price

Split your costs into two kinds:

  • Fixed per order: product, packaging, courier, ads, and fixed fees such as Etsy's $0.20 listing fee and $0.30 processing fee.
  • Percentage of price: transaction and processing percentages, referral fees, a duty allowance set as a share of price, and the returns allowance.

Break-even price = fixed costs per order / (1 - percentage costs).
Price for a target margin = fixed costs per order / (1 - percentage costs - target margin).

For the chappal example, fixed costs are $48.25 per order (product $16.25, packaging $1.50, courier $22.00, ads $8.00, Etsy fixed fees $0.50) and percentage costs are 33% (Etsy 13%, duty allowance 15%, returns 5%). So:

GoalCalculationPrice needed
Break even48.25 / (1 - 0.33)about $72
25% margin48.25 / (1 - 0.33 - 0.25)about $115
30% margin48.25 / (1 - 0.33 - 0.30)about $130

At $99 the same chappal makes about $18.08 (18%): better, but still below the 25% target. To close the gap, cut a fixed cost (cheaper courier rate, lower ad cost per sale), add value buyers pay for (a leather-care kit, width options, personalisation), or ship pairs in bulk. If the target-margin price is far above what buyers pay on Etsy for similar items, the niche fails on single parcels.

Bundles and higher order values

Fixed costs per order are what kill low-priced items, so the cure is more value per order:

  • Same-SKU bundles for the EU. The EU's EUR 3 duty is charged per item category (goods sharing a tariff classification), not per piece. Five T-shirts pay EUR 3; T-shirts plus a watch pay EUR 6. A parcel of one product type pays less than a mixed parcel.
  • Sets and kits. A pair of chappals plus a care kit, a knife roll with a knife, a family set of prayer mats. One courier charge and one set of fixed fees cover more revenue.
  • Digital bundles. On Etsy from Pakistan the fixed $0.50 per order is about 11% of a $4.50 sale but under 3% of an $18 bundle (an illustrative price for 10 designs). Total Etsy fees fall from about 24% to about 16% of the price.
  • Minimum order values on your own store, so a single cheap item can't be ordered on its own.

Bulk shipping to a warehouse abroad

For heavy or low-priced goods (salt, onyx, towels, sports balls, home textiles), single parcels from Pakistan rarely work. Ship cartons by sea or air to Amazon FBA or a third-party logistics warehouse (3PL) in the destination country and fulfil locally. One customs entry covers the whole shipment, couriers deliver domestically, and buyers get fast delivery.

The trade-offs: you pay for stock months before you sell it, plus prep, storage, fulfilment fees, warehouse returns and the risk of unsold stock. The salt-lamp example shows that bulk shipping alone doesn't save a commodity product; it works best for products with a good margin that sell steadily. Test demand with small parcels first, then move proven SKUs into bulk.

Currency and cash flow

The rupee was about Rs 277 to the US dollar in October 2026. Price in dollars, recheck prices every quarter or whenever the exchange rate or courier rates move, and keep two to three months of working capital, because marketplace payouts and reserves can lag weeks behind your costs.

Checklist before you buy stock

  1. Get a written price from the maker and a courier quote for the packed weight.
  2. Look up the tariff code and duty for your main market, including the 10% Section 301 duty for the US.
  3. Run the formula at your planned price, and calculate the break-even and target-margin prices.
  4. Compare that price with what similar items actually sell for.
  5. Decide: single parcels, bundles, bulk to a warehouse, or a different product.

Not sure the numbers work? Compare ideas in the Niche Finder, read how to find your niche, compare fees in sales channels, and see duties, costs and risks. Bulky categories such as onyx, marble and salt and home textiles usually need bulk shipping; light ones such as jewellery and gemstones and footwear and headwear can work as single parcels at the right price. All examples are illustrative assumptions, not quotes or market data. Duty depends on the product's tariff code and changes often; confirm with your courier or a customs broker.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate profit per order?

Profit per order is the price minus product, packaging, shipping, duties, platform and payment fees, ads and a returns allowance. Divide by the price for your margin and aim for 25 to 30% or more after all costs.

How much does Etsy charge a seller in Pakistan per sale?

As of November 2026, $0.20 per listing, 6.5% transaction fee and 6.5% + $0.30 payment processing, so about 13% of the order plus $0.50. Offsite Ads add 15% (12% for larger shops) when a sale comes from one, capped at $100.

How do I find my break-even price?

Add up fixed costs per order (product, packaging, courier, ads, fixed fees) and divide by one minus your percentage costs (fees, duty allowance, returns). For a target margin, also subtract the margin from one before dividing.

When should I ship in bulk instead of single parcels?

When products are heavy, bulky or low-priced and already sell steadily. Shipping cartons to Amazon FBA or a 3PL abroad spreads freight and customs over many units, but you pay for stock, storage and fulfilment upfront.
